What alfalfa sprouting seed actually is

Alfalfa sprouts (Medicago sativa) are one of the most established fresh-sprout categories worldwide — found in supermarket salad mixes, sandwich toppings, hydroponic micro-green farms, juice bars, and increasingly in functional food formulations. But the seed used to grow human-consumption sprouts is a completely different product to the alfalfa seed sold for field planting in dairy and forage systems.

Sprouting seed is a food product, not an agricultural input

Once a buyer's end customer eats the sprout, the seed becomes a food product subject to FDA (USA), EU EFSA, UK FSA, SFDA (Saudi Arabia), FSANZ (Australia / NZ), and similar national food-safety frameworks. Each jurisdiction has its own microbial tolerance specifications. KOHENOOR ships untreated alfalfa seed with ISTA certification — buyers needing additional microbial certification for human-consumption use can arrange independent third-party lab testing prior to shipment.

KOHENOOR's sprouting-use alfalfa seed is untreated (no fungicide, no insecticide, no coating) and ISTA-tested per lot for purity and germination. Buyers needing microbial certification for human-consumption sprouting can coordinate that testing through an independent third-party lab — either via their own incoming-QC supplier or via KOHENOOR's coordination at the buyer's cost.

⚠️ Important for buyers: Do not use chemically-treated agricultural alfalfa seed (such as KOHENOOR KN92 or TAIZTAR cultivars sold for forage planting) for human-consumption sprouting. Forage seed is sold for field planting and may carry chemical seed treatments not safe for human consumption. Always confirm the seed lot you are receiving is untreated and intended for the sprouting end-use before commissioning a production run.

Why import sprouting alfalfa from Pakistan

Pakistan's Punjab and Sindh provinces deliver one of the world's most favourable production environments for sprouting-grade alfalfa: long dry summers (low field-disease pressure), controlled-irrigation seed-multiplication systems, low input costs, and direct FOB Karachi container access to every major sprouting-seed importing region within 12-38 transit days.

Why Pakistani origin makes commercial sense

Alfalfa sprouting seed pricing globally is set by a small handful of origins and moves daily with crop yield, FX, freight rates, and seasonal demand. KOHENOOR is one of the few origin-direct exporters quoting at live current-market rates — not an indexed price list. Buyers get the actual FOB Karachi quote on the day they enquire, against current spec lots in our warehouse.

What that means for your procurement team:

✅ How to get an accurate FOB quote: Send tonnage + destination port + microbial spec via WhatsApp +92 310 4929292 or the quote form on this page. We reply within 24 business hours with the current-day FOB Karachi rate, current lot's ISTA and microbial certificates, and shipping schedule options. Quotes are live and re-confirmed at contract stage.

Note on food-safety testing: KOHENOOR supplies seed with ISTA purity and germination certification. Buyers requiring additional food-safety testing (Salmonella, E. coli, pesticide residue, heavy metals, etc.) for human-consumption sprouting use can arrange this through their own incoming-QC laboratory, or KOHENOOR can coordinate testing through an independent third-party lab at the buyer's cost prior to shipment. We do not market the seed as carrying microbial certification we have not actually arranged.

Quality, certification & documentation — what we actually deliver

Three documents in every shipment

Every KOHENOOR alfalfa seed shipment leaves Karachi with a baseline documentation pack that buyers and customs brokers worldwide recognise on sight — ready for clearance without delay.

  • ISTA Orange Certificate — independently lab-tested for seed purity, germination percentage, and other crop seed presence per ISTA international rules. Issued lot-by-lot.
  • Phytosanitary Certificate — issued by Pakistan's Department of Plant Protection certifying the consignment meets plant-health import requirements.
  • Certificate of Origin — issued by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Optional documents (issued on request, sometimes at buyer's cost): commercial invoice, packing list, insurance certificate, bill of lading, halal certificate, fumigation certificate, third-party microbial / pesticide residue / heavy metals testing through an independent lab.

KOHENOOR alfalfa seed packing operation in Karachi with lot-tagged bags ready for export

Our quality process — what actually happens between field and bag

  1. Origin selection — we work with established seed-multiplication growers in Punjab and Sindh, the two best-suited Pakistani provinces for alfalfa seed production.
  2. Manual rogueing at flowering — physical removal of off-types and weed plants in the seed field before harvest, a step that machine-harvested Western seed industries often skip.
  3. Cleaning + conditioning — gravity tables and indent cylinders remove broken seed, immature seed, and foreign matter.
  4. Hand-sorting — final visual inspection for lots earmarked for high-spec buyers including sprouting use.
  5. ISTA lab testing per lot — independent laboratory issues the Orange Certificate.
  6. Bagging with sealed lot tags traceable end-to-end.
  7. Phytosanitary inspection by Pakistan Department of Plant Protection.
  8. Loading + FOB Karachi dispatch.
What we don't claim: KOHENOOR does not represent itself as a food-safety certified processing facility, and we do not issue in-house Salmonella, E. coli, pesticide residue, or heavy-metals certificates. Any buyer requiring food-grade microbial certification for human-consumption sprouting use can arrange independent third-party testing — either through their own incoming-QC laboratory, or coordinated by KOHENOOR through an independent lab at the buyer's cost, prior to shipment. We say this in writing because honesty is part of how we have stayed in business for 68 years.

Sprouting yield economics — what 1 MT of seed produces

Procurement teams new to sprouting alfalfa often ask: "how many pounds of sellable sprouts per metric ton of seed?" Below are the typical commercial benchmarks our sprout-house buyers report. Your actual yield depends on cultivation method (drum / tray / hydroponic), sprouting time, and yield-loss QC.

Production methodSeed inputTypical sprout yieldYield ratioCycle time
Drum sprouting (commercial)1 MT (1000 kg)~7,000-8,000 kg fresh sprouts7-8× by weight5-7 days
Tray sprouting1 MT (1000 kg)~6,500-7,500 kg fresh sprouts6.5-7.5× by weight5-7 days
Hydroponic micro-green1 MT (1000 kg)~5,000-6,500 kg micro-greens5-6.5× by weight10-14 days
Home / artisan jar1 kg dry seed~6-7 kg sprouts6-7× by weight5-7 days
Yield-to-sprout economics: A typical drum sprout operation converts roughly 1 kg of food-grade seed into 7-8 kg of finished sprouts over a 5-7 day cycle. Once the seed-cost-per-kg-sprout is established at your current FOB rate, the multiplier remains stable across different price periods — making sprouting alfalfa one of the most predictable raw-material-to-finished-product ratios in fresh-food manufacturing. For a current-day FOB Karachi rate against your tonnage, send your specification via WhatsApp or the quote form.

The KOHENOOR Safety Promise

An export contract is a trust relationship. Below is what KOHENOOR promises in writing — only things we actually do, not what marketing would have us claim.

Our commitments on every shipment:

  1. ISTA-certified seed quality — every lot independently lab-tested for purity and germination before bagging.
  2. Lot-level traceability from field of origin to bag tag to your warehouse — auditable end-to-end.
  3. Untreated natural seed on sprouting-use orders. No fungicide, insecticide, or coating.
  4. Documentation per destination market — ISTA + Phyto + COO baseline, with destination-specific additions arranged as required.
  5. Counter-sample retention — we hold a counter-sample of every shipped lot so any future buyer question can be answered against the actual seed shipped.
  6. Honest about what we don't do — we do not issue in-house Salmonella, E. coli, pesticide-residue, or heavy-metals certification. Where buyers require this, we coordinate independent third-party testing at the buyer's cost.

This isn't marketing language — it's how the business has been run since 1957. We are a family business and our name sits on every bag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between alfalfa seed for sprouting and alfalfa seed for forage planting?
For sprouting use buyers typically require untreated natural seed (no fungicide / insecticide / coating) with high germination. KOHENOOR supplies untreated alfalfa seed for sprouting use with the ISTA Orange Certificate. Agricultural forage seed sold for field planting (such as KOHENOOR's KN92 or TAIZTAR cultivars) may be chemical-treated and should not be used for human-consumption sprouting. Always confirm with us at order stage that the lot is intended for sprouting use.
What is the minimum order quantity for alfalfa sprouting seeds?
Our MOQ is 1 metric ton (1000 kg) FOB Karachi. Commercial sprout houses typically order 5-25 MT per shipment depending on facility throughput and sprout production line capacity. Container-load pricing (20-25 MT 20-foot equivalent) offers our most competitive FOB rates. Annual contracts above 100 MT receive tiered volume discounts.
Does KOHENOOR test alfalfa seed for Salmonella and E. coli?
No — KOHENOOR does not issue in-house Salmonella or E. coli certification. Our standard documentation pack is ISTA Orange Certificate (purity + germination), Phytosanitary Certificate, and Certificate of Origin. Buyers requiring food-grade microbial certification for human-consumption sprouting use can arrange independent third-party testing through their own incoming-QC lab, or we can coordinate testing through an accredited lab at the buyer's cost prior to shipment. We say so in writing because honesty matters more than a marketing claim.
What is the typical lead time from order to FOB Karachi shipment?
For lots already in stock: 7-12 days from confirmed order to FOB Karachi vessel loading. For freshly conditioned lots from cold-storage processing: 14-21 days. Custom microbial or organic certification requirements add 7-14 days for sample-and-confirm testing. We confirm exact lead time in writing at the quote stage.
Do you supply organic-certified sprouting seeds?
Yes — USDA NOP, EU Organic (EC 834/2007), or JAS-certified lots subject to minimum 5 MT order and 60-90 day lead time. Certified-organic typically prices 30-40% above conventional food-grade. Documentation includes the destination-market organic certificate, transaction certificate, and chain-of-custody from our certified processing facility.
What payment terms do you accept?
First-time buyers: 100% TT against scan copy of B/L, or Irrevocable Letter of Credit at sight from a top-tier bank. Repeat buyers (3+ successful shipments): terms negotiable up to net 30 days against shipping documents. We do not extend open-account credit before establishing trade history.
Can I receive a sample before placing a commercial order?
Yes. We send 250 g - 1 kg samples with the ISTA Orange Certificate from the current lot. Sample seed is free; the buyer pays DHL or FedEx courier (typically $35-60 depending on destination). Sample requests via WhatsApp +92 310 4929292 — we usually dispatch within 2 business days of confirmation.
How should sprouting alfalfa seeds be stored before use?
Cool storage (≤15 °C / 59 °F is optimal, ≤20 °C / 68 °F is acceptable), low humidity (≤60% relative humidity), dark environment, original sealed packaging unopened until use. Under these conditions germination stays above 95% for 18-24 months. After opening, transfer to clean dry food-contact containers and use within 6-12 months — once exposed to ambient humidity, germination begins gradual decline.
What packaging options are available?
Standard: 25 kg poly-lined PP woven bags with sealed lot tags. Optional: 1 MT FIBC big bags for high-volume sprout houses, 5 / 10 kg vacuum-sealed retail packs (MOQ 5 MT), buyer private-label packaging with your own SKU and barcoding (MOQ 10 MT). All packaging is food-contact-approved and meets FDA / EU food-grade requirements.
Which countries do you regularly ship alfalfa sprouting seeds to?
Our largest sprouting seed markets are USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Netherlands, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. We also ship smaller volumes to Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and across the broader GCC region. Shipping is FOB Karachi per buyer's L/C or contract.
What documentation do you provide with each shipment?
Every shipment includes: ISTA Orange Certificate (purity + germination), Phytosanitary Certificate (Pakistan Department of Plant Protection), Certificate of Origin (Karachi Chamber of Commerce), Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and Bill of Lading. Additional documents on request: halal certificate, fumigation certificate, or independent third-party microbial / pesticide-residue / heavy-metals lab report coordinated through an accredited lab at the buyer's cost.
How does the FOB Karachi shipping process work for international buyers?
After contract confirmation: (1) we condition + bag your lot to specification, (2) issue a shipping advice with vessel ETA and container booking, (3) deliver to Karachi Port for container stuffing under buyer's freight forwarder, (4) hand all original documents to your forwarder or courier them per contract. Typical transit times: 5-7 days to Jebel Ali, 12-15 days to Hamburg / Rotterdam, 18-24 days to Felixstowe, 25-32 days to US East Coast, 30-38 days to US West Coast, 22-28 days to Tokyo / Yokohama.
Do you treat sprouting seed with any chemicals or coatings?
No. All KOHENOOR alfalfa sprouting seed is natural untreated seed. We do not apply fungicides, insecticides, seed coatings, or any chemical treatment. This is non-negotiable for food-grade sprouting buyers and is verified at every lot certification.
Can you handle private-label / OEM packaging for our brand?
Yes. Minimum order is 10 MT per SKU. We work with your brand artwork, barcode, ingredient panel, and country-of-sale compliance requirements. Common formats: 50 g, 100 g, 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg retail packs in vacuum-sealed pouches with stand-up base. Lead time for first private-label run is typically 45-60 days from artwork approval; repeat orders 21-30 days.
Do you supply Calcium Hypochlorite for seed sanitisation?
Yes. We supply FDA-recommended food-grade Calcium Hypochlorite for the standard 20,000 ppm pre-sprouting seed-disinfection step. Drum sizes 25 kg / 45 kg / 100 kg, MSDS and certificate of analysis included. Often shipped alongside the seed order in the same container to consolidate freight.
Will you connect us with sprouting equipment manufacturers?
Yes — for verified-buyer accounts we make direct introductions to industry-standard drum sprouter and tray sprouter manufacturers (in USA, Korea, Turkey). No commission or fee from us; the relationship is buyer-direct. This is a value-added service we offer our regular sprouting seed clients.
What's the actual sprouting yield per metric ton of alfalfa seed?
Commercial drum sprouting: typically 7,000-8,000 kg of fresh sprouts per 1,000 kg of dry seed (7-8× yield by weight) over a 5-7 day cycle. Tray sprouting: 6,500-7,500 kg per MT. Hydroponic micro-green: 5,000-6,500 kg of finished micro-greens per MT seed over 10-14 days. Actual yield depends on facility hygiene, water quality, ambient conditions, and end-product quality cut-off.
How does your microbial test report look — can I see a sample?
Yes. A redacted sample lot certificate (showing the format, methods, and lab letterhead) is sent on request before any commercial order. Real lot reports are issued for your specific shipment with a unique lot ID matching the bag tags — these accompany the shipping documents and reference the same lot number on the ISTA Orange Certificate.
What's your dispute resolution process if a lot fails buyer-side retesting?
If your incoming-goods retest finds a microbial failure on a KOHENOOR lot: (1) we acknowledge within 24 hours, (2) we pull our retained 2 kg counter-sample of the same lot and have it independently re-tested within 5 business days, (3) if our retest confirms the issue, we replace the lot from current inventory at our cost and dispatch within 7-14 days. We hold counter-samples for 18 months precisely so disputes have an unambiguous arbitration path.
Are KOHENOOR alfalfa sprouting seeds non-GMO?
Yes — all KOHENOOR alfalfa sprouting seed is non-GMO. Pakistan does not commercially cultivate GMO alfalfa. We can issue a Letter of Guarantee against GMO on request, and lots can be IP-tested for the presence of CP4 EPSPS or other commonly tested GMO markers if required by your jurisdiction.
What is your annual production capacity for alfalfa sprouting seed?
Our current annual capacity for alfalfa sprouting seed is 600-800 MT per year, segregated from our larger forage-grade alfalfa production. Annual contracts for 100+ MT receive guaranteed allocation and tiered pricing. We do not allocate against speculative orders — reserved volume requires contract confirmation and L/C or TT deposit.
